Batik, a traditional dyeing technique from West-Africa
Batik is the art of dying fabrics with wax
Areas on the fabric have designs applied with wax. The cloth is then put into dyes. Wherever there is wax, the dye color will not soak in, leaving the design intact.
As the applied wax resists dyes, it allows the artisan to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating if multiple colours are desired.
Tie-and-dye, a creative process
Tie-dye is a process that consists of folding, twisting, pleating, or crumpling fabric or a garment and binding with string or rubber bands, followed by application of dye(s).
